Theater of Dionysos

The Theater of Dionysos was a major theater located at the foot of the Athenian Akropolis in Athens, Greece. Dedicated to the Greek god of wine, grapes and theater, Dionysus, the theater introduced Greek theater to the heart of the city.

The theater was also known for hosting the performances of works written by famous tragedians such as Euripides, Aischylos, Aristophanes and Sophokles.[1]

History

During the Peloponnesian War, the theater was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[1]

Around 424 BCE Aristophanes's play, The Knights was performed here after Kassandra ensured his lead actor, Thespis, who was being threatened by guards sent by Cult of Kosmos Sage Kleon and whose muse, Aikaterine, was being threatened by Delian League cultist Rhexenor, would show up.[2]
