Kallisto the Bear was a legendary bear whose lair was located within the Golden Fields region of Arkadia, Greece during the 5th century BCE.
During the Peloponnesian War the bear was hunted down by the Spartan misthios Kassandra. Kassandra took its pelt as proof of her success to Daphnae, the leader of the Daughters of Artemis.[1]
Trivia
- In Greek mythology, Kallisto was the name of a nymph who was a daughter of King Lycaon of Arkadia. In the myth, Kallisto was seduced by Zeus, disguised as Artemis, and the god impregnated the nymph. When her pregnancy was discovered, a furious Hera, the wife of Zeus, transformed Kallisto into a bear. After Kallisto's death, Zeus transformed her into a constellation Ursa Major.
