Emblem of the Order of the Ancients

The Grand Maegester of the Order of the Ancients was the leader of the Order of the Ancients. This Grand Maegester's chief purpose was to oversee all of their branches and their actions. In 9th century England, the rank was noted to be part of a line of succession of the House of Wessex, passed down as inheritance to the next in line after King Ælla of Northumbria's death in 867 CE. However, the last noted Grand Maegester, King Alfred, worked against and within his Order under the pseudonym of a "Poor Fellow-Soldier of Christ" to bring about its collapse in England by 878.[1]

Behind the scenes

The title of Grand Maegester uses an alternate spelling of the Latin word Magister, which means "teacher" or "master", and serves as a linguistic prelude to the current title of Grand Master used to denote the leader of a Templar Rite.
