Thrymr's Theft

Þrymr, also known as Thrymr, and Thrym, was king of the Jötnar in Norse mythology.

Mythology[edit | edit source]

It was once said that Þrymr stole Mjölnir from Thor in order to force the Æsir to hand over Freyja to become his wife. He was however killed by the combined forces of Thor, Loki, and Heimdall, who also killed his wife and any jötnar who were at the wedding.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

When Havi went to search for a gift for Gunnlöð, he traveled to Thrymr's house in Jötunheimr. In the house, partially lost at the bottom of an icy lake, Havi recovered a bridal circlet that Thor wore when he was posing as Freyja at her wedding with Þrymr.[2]

Legacy and influence[edit | edit source]

Þrymr had a totem named after him in the popular dice game Orlog. The piece "Thrymr's Theft" would reduce the effect of an opponent's invoked God Favor during a round. An Anglo-Saxon man in Glowecestre, Glowecestrescire possessed the piece, which he gave to the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan after being defeated.[3]

Hildiran, an old woman living in Ravensthorpe sold a bow named after Þrymr, Thrym's Rage.[4]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Þrymr is only mentioned in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla in the form of an Orlog piece and a past resident of Jötunheimr, and as such it is unconfirmed if he is also an Isu.
