Versailles is a small city just outside of Paris, France and was made up of the Recollets and Saint-Louis sub-districts. By virtue of the fact that it housed the royal residence, the Palace of Versailles, the city served as the de facto capital of the nation from 1682 until the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In the late 18th century, Versailles was the childhood home of the French Assassin Charles Dorian's son Arno, who was taken in by the French Templars' Grand Master François de la Serre[2] following Charles' assassination in December 1776 by the Colonial Templar Shay Cormac.[3]

By 1793, the Reign of Terror had plunged the former capital into a state of misery, destitution, and chaos. Crime and vandalism had become rampant, and its population had been reduced to a mere fraction of what it once was, with many either fleeing the city altogether[1] or dying at the hands of Aloys la Touche.[4] The Palace had become a popular target for looters as well.[1]

In the summer of 1855, the French Assassin Amira Benyamina traveled to the small city with Simeon Price, a former soldier from the British Army. Rowing through a canal, Amira asked Price to perform a Leap of Faith into the waters and dive to the bottom. After grabbing mud from the bottom of the waters, Price presented it to Benyamina. Although Price felt down, Amira explained that his faith proved opposite and she inducted him into the Brotherhood.[5]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Despite the 2014 video game Assassin's Creed: Unity depicting the French Revolution as starting immediately after players have completed Arno Dorian's first genetic memory sequence with the mission "High Society", this political change is already present in Versailles when players start the sequence in "Memories of Versailles". Citizens congregate in a revolutionary mood, with some wearing Phrygian caps. Others fly France's national flag instead of the House of Bourbon's royal standard, even though heraldic flags were used only by people of high rank to identify themselves to others of equivalent or similar status, and so it is unlikely that the common populace would have their own copies of the banner.

There are four windmills on the west side, all of which have a rooster weather vane on the spire. However, the letters for the cardinal directions are N, E, S, W. In French, the cardinal directions are nord, est, sud, and ouest. Thus, the letters should be N, E, S, O. Moreover, the W always points to the north, not the N.
