The Vault is one of the "Temples" left by "Those Who Came Before", located underneath the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. The exact purpose of the Vault and the other Temples is still unknown. Minerva's message implies that the Vault's contain some sort of assistance or research in saving of a repeat of the Catastrophe that occurred before.

The Vatican Vault was a large chamber constructed by the Isu, located beneath the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. It appears that only a combination of different Pieces of Eden can open it along with specific people seem to be able to enter them. Recognized as a "prophet", Ezio Auditore da Firenze was able to enter the Vault by using the Staff in conjunction with the Apple of Eden, where as Rodrigo Borgia was unable to do so. The floors, walls and pillars of the Vault are covered in glyphs that only appear as Ezio moves near them because he was the prophet.

It was thought by Borgia that the Vault contained God. However, the Vault actually contains an unknown being named "Minerva". All we know is one of the beings "That Came Before". Minerva, who appears through a holographic device, By her own admission, she is not a God, but a member of a highly advanced race that came before humans. Minerva explains that her race had created humans, but soon faced rebellion. According to Minerva, the Temples were built by "those who knew to turn away from war," presumably those who did not fight or did not want to fight in the war between the humans and Those Who Came Before. The reason for this was an unknown catastrophe, presumably a large solar flare, that significantly damaged the Earth and killed off most of both species. Those in the Temples worked to protect the world, and Minerva tasks Desmond Miles, speaking to him through Ezio, with locating the other Temples to avert another cataclysm.

Minerva's Speech and Message to Desmond
"When we were still flesh, and our homes still whole, Your kind betrayed us... We Who made you.
We who gave you life. We were strong but you were many, and both of us craved War.
So busy were we with earthly concerns, we failed to notice the heavens,
and by the time we did, the world burned until earth burned until not remained but ash.
It should have ended then and there but we built you in our own image. We built you, to survive,
and so we did. Few were out numbers... your kind and mine. It took sacrifice, strength, compassion,
but we rebuilt, and as life returned to the world we remembered to ensure this tragety could not be repeated.
But now, we are dying, and time will work against us. Truth turned into myth, and legend. What we built,
miss understood. Let my words preserve the messege and make a record of our loss.
But let my word also bring hope. You must find teh other temples. Built by those who knew to turn away
from war. They wanted to protect us, to save us from the fire. If you can find them. If there work can be saved,
so too might this world. Be quick for time grows short and guard against the cross for there are
many that will stand in your way.

I wanted to ask you something. Which is... what's your name?
This article title is conjecture. Although the article subject is canon, no official name for it has been given.
Rodrigo: "Don't you know what lies within? Or do you mean to tell me that the great and powerful Assassins didn't figure it out?"
Ezio: "Figure what out?"
Rodrigo: "God! It's God that dwells within!"
—Rodrigo Borgia and Ezio Auditore discussing the Vault, 1499.[src]-[m]
The interior of the Vault

The Vatican Vault was a large chamber constructed by the Isu, located beneath the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. It was used to transmit a message of warning to Desmond Miles in the year 2012, through the memories of the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

History[edit | edit source]

The entrance to the Vault could be opened by combining two Pieces of Eden, an Apple and a Staff of Eden. These two also needed to be held by a chosen descendant of the Isu.[1]

Recognized as "the Prophet" in 1499, Ezio Auditore was able to access the Vault by using the Papal Staff, in conjunction with his Apple of Eden. Despite attempting to use the same two Pieces of Eden, Rodrigo Borgia was unable to open the door to the Vault.[1]

The floors, walls, and pillars of the Vault were covered in glyphs that only appeared to Ezio as he moved toward them. The entire chamber and the hallway leading to it were marked with lines of blue light,[1] an appearance unique to most Vaults.[2]

Minerva and Ezio within the Vault

Rodrigo Borgia was convinced that the Vault contained God himself, and he intended to kill him using the Pieces of Eden and steal his power. However, the chamber instead held a holographic projection of the Isu scientist Minerva.[1]

Upon the arrival of Ezio, Minerva explained that her race had created mankind to serve them, but faced rebellion soon thereafter. Glyphs on the wall confirmed this, showing an Egyptian hieroglyphic of an Isu holding a Piece of Eden as humans charged toward them with weapons.[1]

Minerva also spoke of several Vaults that had been built by "those who knew to turn away from war," presumably referring to those who did not fight in the Human-Isu War. These Vaults had been built to protect the world from a repeat of the First Disaster, which had nearly wiped out both warring species.[1]

Finally, Minerva spoke through Ezio to directly address Desmond Miles, who she knew would look through his ancestor's memories with the Animus. She tasked Desmond with locating the other Vaults and averting a second cataclysm. These words puzzled Ezio, though before he could receive any answers, Minerva's hologram faded away.[1] The Assassin subsequently left the Vault, which became sealed once again after having served its intended purpose.[2]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

 • The walls of the Vault were covered in symbols, including Sumerian numerals.
 • The Vault in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood appears to have been redesigned since Assassin's Creed II, where the floor has a shiny, polished look, and the walls and obelisks are blue and give off a dim glow.
 • After leaving the Vault with Mario Auditore, the player cannot return to the Vault even after completing the game.
 • In Assassin's Creed III, the conversation between Ezio and Minerva is displayed twice, once by Juno to Desmond, and in the introduction recap. In both instances though, the outfit Ezio wore was incorrect.
