You cannot know anything. Only suspect.

This article contains content from pre-release sources that may or may not be reflective of canon upon release. This article therefore likely contains spoilers.

The Sack of Rome on 6 May 1527 was part of the larger War of the League of Cognac between the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and the League of Cognac, which included the Papal States under Pope Clement VII.[1] Following Rome's capture by largely-unpaid Landsknechte, the mercenaries mutinied and stormed the city to loot it.[2] During the chaos, Clement VII was taken prisoner in the Castel Sant'Angelo, though managed to escape his captors disguised as a tradesman.[3] The Germans then occupied the city until February 1528, when they were forced to withdraw to Naples after hearing that League forces were advancing to recapture Rome, which had just suffered a plague outbreak. Due to both the attack and the spread of illness, Rome's population dropped to a fifth of its prior size.[1]

In 2012, Abstergo Industries added a mnemonic set to Project Legacy themed around many different "Sacks of Rome" and added Charles V to it to represent the 1527 event.[4] In 2016, a group of Assassins reliving memories set during the Roman Kingdom experienced a glitch that transferred them to Rome during the 1527 sacking, with them having to escape the simulation through a rift that appeared atop the Pantheon.[2]
