"Men make swords and spears, but teeth and claws are fashioned by the gods."
― Phratagounè[src]-[m]

Phratagounè (died c. 429 BCE), also known by her epithet the Keeper, was an Order of the Ancients member in the Order of Hunters branch that was active in Makedonia during the peak of the Peloponnesian War.

Biography[edit | edit source]

While the Peloponnesian War raged in Greece, Phratagounè followed her branch's Magus Pactyas to hunt for "Tainted Ones", which included people like Darius and his only surviving son, Natakas.[1] However, due to her recluse nature, Phratagounè left her comrades and preferred to live away from civilization in the company of her animals, admiring them for their loyalty and inability to lie.[2] At some point before 429 BCE, Phratagounè grew close enough to Pactyas for him to entrust his animals into her care. She trained them to be loyal so that when the Order found their quarry, they would kill any "Tainted Ones" without objection.[2]

However, despite Phratagounè living far from society in a den of bears within the Unexplored Mount Pangeon, it was not enough to prevent her death. In 429 BCE, the misthios Kassandra travelled through Makedonia and happened upon Phratagounè in her base, though she could not immediately identify her, with Ikaros mistaking Phratagounè for a Beastmaster from the Daughters of Artemis.[3] After Kassandra followed a series of clues that correctly identified the woman in the bear caves as an Order member, she returned and assassinated her, ending Pactyas' source of trained wild animals.[4]

Personality and traits[edit | edit source]

Phratagounè preferred the company of her animals to people, believing them to be more loyal than people. She also believed that her animals killing ability surpassed that of man's, as they would not kill without reason. Phratagounè gave them a reason to kill.[2]

Skills and equipment[edit | edit source]

Phratagounè had the ability to tame even the most vicious of beasts, being able to tame bears around Makedonia to fight for her.[5] She wore a variant of the Tracker armor, commonly found across Greece. Her weapons of choice were a curved sword and a simple bow.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Phratagounè is a fictional character introduced in the first entry of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey's three-part 2021 downloadable expansion Legacy of the First Blade: Hunted. She shares her name with the Achaemenid princess Phratagune, one of King Darius I's consorts, though there is no other connection between the two.
