Nimlot (died 860s)[1] was a merchant active in Egypt and later Al-Ula,[2] where he also functioned as the leader of a gang of robbers.[3] The son of Mas'ood Al-Ya'qoob, Nimlot was present during the latter's assassination by Basim ibn Ishaq. Some time later, when Basim travelled to Al-Ula in search of his own father, Ishaq ibn Khalid, Nimlot had his robbers kidnap the old man in order to force a confrotation with Basim, hoping to inflict the same pain in him, though Basim managed to kill Nimlot before he could harm Ishaq.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Born as the heir to a family of wealthy merchants[2] in Baghdad,[1] Nimlot left for Egypt as a teenager hoping to win his father's respect. There, he served as a soldier, earning the name Nimlot, before becoming a merchant.[2] Having made his fortune,[4] and with limited future prospects in the country, he traveled to Al-Ula, where he became known for his keen business acumen, compassion and honor,[2] though unbeknownst to most of the region he was also the leader of a gang of robbers that frightened even the Caliphate soldiers.[3]
After years away, Nimlot returned to Baghdad to see his father, but as they were starting to rekindle their ties, Mas'ood, a member of the Order of the Ancients was assassinated by the Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq at a Caravanserai near Baghdad. Having witnessed the deed, Nimlot soon returned to Al-Ula.[1]
Some months later, his robbers attacked the Warehouses, and Hind, whose house was part of the complex, asked Basim to escort her to Nimlot's Estate, fearing for her life. Nimlot met with Hind and welcomed her to his home, allowing her to stay there for the mean time. He then spoke to Basim, recognizing him as his father's killer though not being recognized in return. Basim explained he hadn't come to Al-Ula seeking bloodshed, but in search of his own father, Ishaq ibn Khalid, to which Nimlot pointed him at the AlUla Market as a place to gather further information.[4]
Nimlot had Ishaq kidnapped from his home[5] and taken to one of the robbers' outposts in Ramm Valley, before having him moved to his stronghold at the Roman Fort Ruins.[3] There, he awaited Basim in the complex's inner tower.[1]
When Basim arrived, Nimlot confronted him about the murder at the Caravanserai, revealing himself as the son of the man Basim called Al-Ghul. Nimlot then attempted to kill Ishaq, though was stopped by Basim before he could reach the older man. The Hidden One then exfiltrated himself and his father from the stronghold, but not without also taking Nimlot's Sword with him.[1]
