The Battle of Gogunda or Battle of Haldighati was fought in June 1576 between the forces of the Rajput chief Pratap Singh and Mughal emperor Akbar.
The Mughals sought to subdue Mewar, one of the few remaining areas not under their control in the region of Rajasthan. Akbar pursued an aggressive policy in order to crush the Rajputs. Although the Mughals emerged victorious, Pratap Singh's was able to mount an impressive opposition to Akbar's assault.[1]
In the aftermath of Akbar's war on the Rajputs, Pratap Singh continued his resistance from the Aravalli hills, refusing to recognize Mughal rule until years after the defeat of his army.[1]
