The skirmish in the Campagna District was a military conflict fought between the forces of Bartolomeo d'Alviano and Octavian de Valois in 1503, within the Campagna District of Rome.

Hostility
Bartolomeo had been ensnared in a losing battle with the French for a few years, and it had grown worse with the addition of Borgia soldiers. However, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze aided Bartolomeo in his fight by assassinating Battista Borgia, causing the Borgia troops to withdraw from the battle.

Arriving at the barracks, Ezio was greeted by a paranoid Bartolomeo, who pointed his sword to him in a panicking manner. When he saw that it was only Ezio, his paranoia subsided, and segued into a more cheerful side. He told Ezio that he was expecting his wife. Ezio then asked who the Baron de Valois was. Bartolomeo informs him that Cesare persuaded King Louis to lend him an entire army to combat against Bartolomeo, a fact that flatters him.
Following the battle, the Assassins were able to focus their attention to the Borgia, having driven the French soldiers from Rome. This led the Assassins to procure a key to the Castel Sant'Angelo, enabling them with full access of the Castello.

Ezio asked where the Baron was, to which Bartolomeo informed that he nearly has Valois by the throat, and assured that the French are in retreat. As they conversed, however, a French arquebusier shot at the two from a distance, but missed. Despite this, Bartolomeo still assured that the fight was going well, until a mercenary loudly announced that French troops were moving in for a direct assault. Bartolomeo then admitted he may need some help containing the situation.

Following the assassination of Cardinal Juan Borgia the Elder, Ezio made his way to the Campagna District in Rome. Bartolomeo d'Alviano, a fellow Assassin and leader of the mercenaries in Rome, had his barracks stationed in the district.

Ezio and Bartolomeo fought against the French forces, driving back the first wave of soldiers; however, more reinforcements attacked the barracks and overwhelmed the mercenaries. Ezio and the mercenaries then had all three of the gates into the barracks closed, to prevent any reinforcements from entering. Although the barracks were safely defended, The Baron, Octavian de Valois and his troops called for Bartolomeo's attention. Octavian, speaking in French, asked Bartolomeo if he was ready to surrender. Bartolomeo angrily threatened the Baron, while the Baron retaliated by insulting Bartolomeo's behavior.
Upon reaching the barracks, Ezio was greeted by Bartolomeo. However, Bartolomeo had become paranoid from the frequent combat with the French forces, and nearly attacked Ezio as a result.

After exchanging insults, Octavian asked for Bartolomeo's surrender before dawn. Bartolomeo then threatened the Baron yet again, stating that he'll have his sword Bianca "whisper" his surrender in his ear. Octavian then revealed that his troops had managed to capture Pantasilea Baglioni, Bartolomeo's wife, and promised to release Pantasilea, should Bartolomeo come into his camp unarmed and alone.

Recognizing Ezio, Bartolomeo let his guard down, and the two had a brief discussion, with Bartolomeo informing Ezio of the battle and the French commander, the Baron Octavian de Valois. Before they could continue their deliberation, a mercenary caught sight of a French battalion approaching, and shouted for the gates to be closed.

Extremely enraged, Bartolomeo rode on horseback, followed by Ezio, to the French camp for a rescue attempt, however they discovered that the camp was completely impenetrable. After Bartolomeo shouted and angrily barked insults at the gates of the camp, he eventually lost hope due after seemingly having no options left. Because of his wife's absence, he could not think of a strategy, and was ready to surrender unarmed, hoping that Valois will spare Pantasilea. Hearing this, Ezio thought of a plan, ordering Bartolomeo to call off the attacks and return to the barracks. After Bartolomeo ordered his men to fall back, Ezio returned to the Barracks to discuss his plan.
Becoming aware that he required aid, Bartolomeo ordered Ezio to shut the gates while his men battled with the French soldiers. Maneuvering around the combat, Ezio was able to shut the various gates of the barracks, preventing additional French soldiers from entering the battle. Having closed the gates, Ezio then assisted Bartolomeo and his men in vanquishing the French troops that remained in the barracks.

Trojan Horse
Although the barracks had been secured, the Baron and his troops made advances towards the barracks, calling for Bartolomeo's attention. As Bartolomeo listened attentively, Octavian solicited for Bartolomeo's unconditional surrender. Headstrong, Bartolomeo refused the Baron's request irritably.

Ezio stealthily inflitrated several camps throughout the Campagna district, and successfully killed the French troops stationed there, leaving the mercenaries to strip the bodies of their armor. By dawn, Ezio met Bartolomeo and his mercenaries at the rendezvous. With all of them disguised as the French troops, aside from Bartolomeo who acted as their "prisoner," they marched to the French camp. Ezio ran ahead to clear the path of any suspicious French guards, to allow their own force to pass the district undetected. Eventually, upon reaching the camp entrance, they were given access, thanks to Ezio's proficiency in speaking French; which, as he explained, was because there were "a few French girls in Firenze."

The death of the Baron
Once inside, Octavian greeted Bartolomeo, however, he drew his rifle and intended to kill Pantasilea regardless of Bartolomeo's "surrender." Realizing the danger on her life, Ezio then fired his own pistol into the air, startling the Baron and signaling the mercenaries to begin the attack. Octavian fled deeper into the camp with Pantasilea as his hostage, sending several of his men to intercept the mercenaries. Ezio pursued him, killing French captains and Papal guards along the way.
At Bartolomeo's refusal of surrender, the Baron had one of his men bring Bartolomeo's spouse, Pantasilea Baglioni, forward. In response, Bartolomeo threatened the Baron; however, before departing, the Baron gave him an ultimatum in which Bartolomeo would have to enter the French camp unarmed at dawn, or have his spouse killed.

Locating the Baron in a small courtyard, Ezio stealthily killed off his arquebusiers, and assassinated Octavian from above to free Pantasilea.
Enraged, Bartolomeo pursued the Frenchmen on horseback with Ezio. Arriving at the French encampment, Bartolomeo shouted threats and jeers at the French, though Ezio devised a plan, and told Bartolomeo to recall his men to the barracks. Ceding to Ezio's proposal, Bartolomeo briskly departed for the quarters with his men.
