Sheshanka

Sheshanka (died 48 BCE), also known as the Caretaker, was the leader of the Cult of Wadjet in Faiyum, Egypt during the reign of Ptolemy XIII.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Sheshanka was a resident of Soknopaiou Nesos during the 1st century BCE. When Greeks started settling down in the Faiyum, statues of Egyptian deities were gradually replaced with Serapis, causing Sheshanka to bear a hatred towards the Greeks. In response, he started a cult in worshipped of Wadjet, the patron deity of all Egypt, and began conducting attacks against Greeks residents and travellers in the Faiyum. To cover up his operations, he assumed the identity of a villa caretaker in the Greek quarters of Soknopaiou Nesos.[2]
In addition, Sheshanka began breeding large number of snakes in the cave beneath the town and by 48 BCE, he used them in the attacks against the Greeks.[2] He also sent men to eliminate priests in the Sarapeion in Karanis, though they were later stopped by the Medjay, Bayek and the town's Phylakitai, Epigonos.[3]
One one occasion when Sheshanka initiated yet another attack in the Greek quarters, it led Bayek to investigate, having learned of the attacks from Nanefer, an orator in the town. Sheshanka, knowing his identity as a Medjay, invited Bayek to join him in the cave below the temple in hopes of recruiting him to his cause. However, Bayek was no so easily swayed, who remained to investigate the attack.[2]
Fearing that his plans were in jeopardy, Sheshanka kidnapped Nanefer and had him brought to the Pannouki Hideout west of the town to be sacrificed in a blood ritual. He then led two guards to the cave Bayek was in to have him eliminated. However, Sheshanka and his guards were not able to the Medjay, who killed them. In addition, Bayek learned of the hideout that Nanefer was held in and travelled there, killing all the cultists and ending Sheshanka 's cult once and for all.[2]
