Menalkas was an Elean farmer living near the Linou Farm in the 5th century BCE Elis, Greece.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Having inherited his father's farm east of Linou proper, Menalkas came to revere the Eagle Bearer, the Spartan misthios Kassandra, along with his fellow villagers during the Peloponnesian War.[1]
All was well, until Menalkas begun to hear voices and experience visions, his work suffering and his farm subsequently suffering as he could no longer rest nor sleep. All this scared him, and he worried he'd upset the gods somehow. Fortunately for him, Kassandra came to the village, and Menalkas was one of the people the priestess Hexione pointed out to the misthios to help.[2]
Lying amidst his failing crops, Menalkas begged the skies for answers. Instead, he met the Eagle Bearer herself. Telling of what had befallen him, Menalkas alternatively begged and praised Kassandra, and she agreed to investigate.[2]
In the end, Menalkas watched as Kassandra burned down his silo, all the gathered grain inside going up in smoke.[2]
Later on, Menalkas came to Linou proper, looking forward to the feast promised in honor of the Eagle Bearer.[3]
