Wilhelm I or William I (1797 – 1888) was King of Prussia from 1861 and German emperor from 1871 until his death in 1888.

Aided by his Foreign Minister Otto von Bismarck's schemes, Wilhelm led the German alliance into a war against Napoleon III's Second French Empire, a war which ended the French domination in continental Europe and established the German Empire as the dominant power in the region.
