The Sinkholes of Herakles was the southern region of Argolis, Greece.

History

Myth

The Sinkholes of Herakles were named after the legendary hero Herakles, following his victory over the Nemean Lion, which he'd bested by trapping the beast in a sinkhole.^[1]

The region was also, infamously, the site of death of Hippolytos, the son of another legendary hero, Theseus.^[1]

5th century BCE

The site of Hippolytos' death became a sacred place following his demise, with people bringing in offerings. Daughters of Artemis also made a campsite there.^[1]

Years before meeting the Sparta misthios Kassandra, Barnabas and his crew found a mauled, dying man on the nearby beach. Before he passed away, the man warned Barnabas of the beast haunting the region.^[1]

During the Peloponnesian War Kassandra explored the area, finding it largely uninhabited. One reason for this was the beast, which Kassandra hunted down and slew at the request of Daphnae, the leader of the Daughters of Artemis.^[2]
