Olympia

Olympia was an ancient sanctuary in Elis, Greece which was famous for hosting the Olympic Games every four years and for the Temple of Zeus. This latter site housed the Statue of Zeus sculpted by Phidias c. 435 BCE which became known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.[1]

It is Olympia that was the principal driving force of Elis's economy in the 5th century BCE, attracting tourists and athletes from across Greece, the latter of whom paid to receive training for the Olympic Games.[1]
