Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia

The Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia was a temple complex located east of the Sanctuary of Delphi in Phokis, Greece.

History

Dedicated to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, the temple was under the control of the Cult of Kosmos in the 5th century BCE.[1]

During the Peloponnesian War, the complex was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who eliminated the cultist guards and found one of the Ainigmata Ostraka within.[2]

Behind the scenes

Πρόναιᾰ (prónaia) is Greek for 'in advance, before', the sense of the name of the sanctuary being 'Athena before the Temple (of Apollo)' in the Sanctuary of Delphi.

Despite being dedicated to Athena, the main temple in the area houses a bronze statue of a man in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.
