A polis (pl: poleis, English: city) was a type of city-state prominent in ancient Greece throughout the Hellenistic period. During the Peloponnesian War many of the Greek poleis sided with either the Spartan-led Peloponnesian League or the Athenian-led Delian League.

Considered city-states in the modern sense of the word, the poleis of ancient Greece were more akin to kingdoms: entire regions, or islands, dominated by a single governing city. Examples of poleis include Sparta (Lakonia), Athens (Attika), Delos, and Mykonos.
