Persephone, also called Kore, is a Greek queen of the underworld, and goddess of springtime, flowers, blooming. She is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus.

Eleusis was a central location for the worship of Persephone and Demeter, and the Telesterion was where people annually participated in the Eleusinian Mysteries, initiation practices into their cult.

According to the myths, Hades saw Persephone, and abducted her. Demeter went out to look for her, and ultimately did so, but having eaten pomegranate seeds during her stay in the underworld, Persephone could no longer leave it completely. A deal was agreed on that Persephone would spend half the year in the underworld, and another half on top.
