Margit Libényi was the sister of János Libényi, the Hungarian tailor who attempted to kill the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Biography

Margit Libényi was one of the female rebels during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, but was soon captured by the Austrian army, led by Baron Julius Jacob von Haynau. She was later flogged and tortured as an example on orders of von Haynau, but still continued to aid the revolutionaries after her maiming. However, once the rebellion lost, she and her brother János fled to Vienna to find start anew. Yet, their location was found out by the baron's lawyer, Karl Mayr, who started to extort János for Margit's safety.[1]

After János was arrested for the attempt on the emperor's life, Margit was visited by János' friend, "Jack Straw." She told Straw that János was part of the radicals during the revolution, but a new man had recently sparked a fire for him to fight back. However, she could not recall the name and grew angry at her brother for casting a light on the both of them.[2]

Behind the scenes

Historically, Margit was a dancer who caught the eye of the Emperor. Smitten, the emperor had singled Margit out and gave an education at a girls' school. This happened to be a contributing factor of János' attack against the Emperor.[3]
