Madrid is the largest and capital city of Spain.
History
In the late 15th century, the city was home to Cristoval de Merlo, a treasurer for the Inquisition. In 1489, the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins entered the city in search of a painting from a set created by Leonardo da Vinci that had been inadvertently gambled away by their associate, Jaime del Rada. The paintings were obtained by the Inquisition captain Diego de Burgos, who separated them and gave one to each of his underlings. Among those people was Cristoval, who kept the painting deep underground beneath the city slums for safekeeping until it was recovered by the Assassins.[1]
In 1511, Grand Inquisitor Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, the successor of Tomás de Torquemada, had also been persecuting Spanish Assassins for crimes unrelated to their activities. Ottoman Assassins sent from Constantinople by Ezio Auditore da Firenze sought out the culprits in the city and killed them.[2]
The Ottoman Assassins also aided in taking over Madrid from Templar control, and restored and expanded the city, also installing several Assassin Dens.
Centuries later in 2016, Abstergo Industries' Abstergo Foundation established premises within the city.[3][4]
In November 2017, Abstergo technicians and Templar members Alice Adler and Thomas Adler were testing their Animus on their subject, Maxime Gorm, a descendant of British Assassin Eddie Gorm.[5] After achieving the Bleeding Effect with Maxime, the technician couple investigated Eddie's connection with an Apple of Eden as well as the mentions of Project Rainbow to Abstergo. However, their test ended with the realization that Eddie killed himself before gathering more information on the Apple.[6]
After the test ended, they were visited by their amnesiac daughter, Elisa Adler, and her specialist, Dr. Florent Carpentier. Yet, their brief conversation came to an end once a freed Maxime revealed himself to the group. Immediately, Dr. Carpentier tried to kill Maxime as he killed both Alice and Thomas in the process. In response, Maxime fought back and stabbed Carpentier in the eye, while escaping with Elisa. More Assassins arrive as their target is now on the Adler's work on the Bleeding effect as well as Maxime and Elisa's locations.[6]
