Krete, alternatively Crete, is the largest island of Greece and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.
History
Mythology
In Greek mythology, the island was home to the king Minos and the princesses Ariadne and Phaidra and is also where the legendary hero Theseus fought the Minotaur. Later Greek murals on the island prominently featured the Minotaur, and the island itself held an almost mythological status in the Greek world at large.[1]
Early history
Krete was settled for the first time around 8000 BCE, and in time became the home of the Minoan civilization, named after king Minos by the archaeologist Arthur John Evans. This culture thrived on trade, and its influence extended over the eastern Mediterranean, usually through peaceful means.[2]
When the Mycenaeans conquered Krete after 1400 BCE, the Minoan palaces like the Knossos Palace collapsed.[3]
Classical antiquity
During the Peloponnesian War, Krete was split up into Messara and Pephka.[1]
In 48 BCE, the philosopher Aristo of Alexandria and his wife Callista fled to Krete from Egypt after the former was freed from the Ptolemies by the Medjay Bayek of Siwa.[4]
In 44 BCE, sometime after the assassination of Julius Caesar, the Hidden One Marcus Junius Brutus departed for Crete from Rome. There he established a branch of the Hidden Ones and worked to eliminate tyrants on the island.[5]
Renaissance
In 1510, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze stopped off at Krete during his voyage to Masyaf.[6]
Age of Enlightenment
The island was used by the Templar Order as a headquarters many times across the centuries. During the Seven Years' War Shay Cormac sent some agents of his fleet to the island to depart for nearby kingdoms. They recovered the Minoan Bull-Leaping Fresco.[7]
