Hypatos (bandit)

Hypatos was a bandit leader who operated in Argolis and Korinthia during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography

At some point, Hypatos became acquainted with Diokles, a former Athenian soldier who now lived as a fisherman at the Port of Kechries in Korinthia. Diokles soon took to gambling, often borrowing money from Hypatos and becoming one of his smugglers to pay for his losses. Hypatos also became aquainted with The Monger, a bandit leader and a member of the Cult of Kosmos in Korinthia, whom he considered his competitor.^[1]

Eventually Diokles took to stealing Hypatos' money when he couldn't pay for his debts.^[1] This led to Hypatos ordering his men based at the Ruined Temple of Zeus to have Diokles eliminated in around 422 BCE.^[2] However, Hypatos felt that Diokles' death wasn't enough and soon took to kidnapping one of his son Timotheos and holding him captive at the ancient ruins of Mycenae.^[1]

Timotheos was later freed by the misthios Kassandra, who had become friends with both him and his brother Lykinos. Hypatos soon confronted the trio at the ruins, revealing to the brothers the reason for their fathers' deaths.^[1]
