Heinrich Schliemann (6 January 1822 – 26 December 1890) was a German archeologist.

In the 1870s, Schliemann led excavations at Mycenae and assumed the buried monuments outside the citadel were treasuries like those mentioned by Pausanias. He dubbed the largest monument the Treasury of Atreus.[1] He also excavated the city of Orchomenos in Boeotia and discovered and searched for the cities of Troy and Tiryns.[2]
