Eden or the Garden of Eden was a place where the people of the First Civilization were known to exist. They were an advanced race of beings, and created humanity, whom they enslaved using technology later known as the Pieces of Eden in order to build and expand their civilization.

Located in front of Mount Kilamanjaro, in Africa, the city of Eden was where the first recorded act of human liberty was performed. Adam and Eve, who were created by the First Civilizaton as hybrid humans to contain their DNA sequence, stole an Apple of Eden from the city when they broke into the building at the centre of the city. Since Adam and Eve contained DNA from the First Civilization, they could resist the effects of the Pieces of Eden because they did not contain the neurotransmitter in their brains that most humans did. They then used this Apple to free humanity from their masters and began a rebellion. This is shown in the video unlocked after completing the glyphs in Assassin's Creed II.
