Daphnae
Daphnae was the leader of the Daughters of Artemis who resided in Chios, Greece, during the 5th century BCE.
Biography
Sometime in 431 BCE while visiting the Temple of Artemis in Phokis, Daphnae made the acquaintance of the Spartan misthios Kassandra and tasked her with the hunting of eight legendary creatures found across Greece.[1]
After Kassandra obtained the pelts of all the legendary beasts, Daphnae met her on the island of Chios, the sanctuary of the Daughters, where she revealed that by succeeding in slaying the beasts, Kassandra had established herself as a challenger for the position of the leader of the Daughters. The challenger and the acting leader were then to fight to the death in order to decide the leader of the Daughters of Artemis.[2]
Trivia
- If Kassandra chose to kill Daphnae, then she became the new leader of the Daughters of Artemis. If she chose to spare Daphnae, her romantic relationship with her will be broken and a heartbroken Kassandra was told to never return to the site again.
