The Abaton

The Abaton was a building that was located within the Sanctuary of Asklepios in Argolis, Greece.

Function[edit | edit source]

It was the dormitory where the patients of the sanctuary would withdraw to dream after a series of rites, hoping Asklepios, the god of healing, would grant them a vision of their cure.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the place while looking for her mother.[2]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The name of the building comes from Greek word ἄβατον (ábaton), denoting 'sacred enclosure'.
