Ymir was an Isu and considered the ancestor to all jötnar in Norse mythology.
Biography
When the universe was but an empty void where fire met ice, Ymir came into existence with a mighty scream,[1][2] from venom that dripped from the icy rivers Élivágar.[3] In the void, Ymir suckled from the teat of Auðumbla, the primeval cow created from the same drops as Ymir.[4] The brothers Odin, Vili, and Vé cruelly murdered the proto-being.[2] From Ymir's bones, blood and brains, the mountains, oceans, and clouds were created,[1] while Earth was made from his skin and muscles. His hair became the plants living there and his skull became the sky.[2]
Legacy and influence
In Asgard and Jötunheimr, gemstones representing Ymir's tears and blood were collected by Havi sometime during his travels and placed them on offering altars.[5]
