Village of Gytheion

The Village of Gytheion, or simply Gytheion, is a town that was once a small village on the southern shore of Lakonia, Greece. In classical antiquity, the village served as a seaport for Sparta[1] and featured a statue revering the mythical King Orestes of Sparta in the agora.[2]

In 429 BCE, the village served as the rendezvous point for Myrrine and her daughter, the misthios Kassandra as they returned to Sparta after almost two decades.[3]

The village was also the home of the shipwright who crafted the heavy trireme Lakonia during the Peloponnesian War.[4]
