The design of the Askalaphos

The Askalaphos was a great trireme sailing the Aegean Sea east of the Dioskouroi Peninsula during the 5th century BCE.

During the Peloponnesian War the Adrestia, commanded by the Spartan misthios Kassandra and captained by Barnabas, engaged Askalaphos in battle, and sank it. Kassandra claimed the sail and finery of Askalaphos for her own.[1]

Trivia

  • The name of the ship is Greek, ἀσκάλαφος (askálaphos), meaning 'owl'.
