Mytilene

Mytilene is a city located on the coast of the Lover's Bay in Lesbos, Greece. Known as the birthplace of the poet Sappho, the city housed the school she established on a small acropolis overlooking the city.

History

During the Greco-Persian Wars Mytilene was under the domination of the Achaemenid Empire, but later became a loyal ally of Athens after wars and eventually a member of the Delian League. When the Peloponnesian War broke out, the city revolted against Athens in 428 BCE after they were faced with the increasing tributes to the city.[1]

During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the city.[2]
