Memory Seals were First Civilization artifacts with the ability to contain recorded memories. They were said to be the technological basis of the Animus device of Abstergo Industries.

History

In his late life, Altair Ibn-La'Ahad, Mentor of the Levantine Assassins, discovered that Masyaf was built upon a First Civilization temple that contained dozens of memory seals. Altair took six of these memory seals and used them to each record an important event in his life, while five were needed to enter the library beneath the Assassins' fortress of Masyaf.

Two other seals in Alexandria were located by the Mamluk Sultan's soldiers in 1511, during the excavation of the Library of Alexandria. These seals, kept within a chest dated 331 BC, were recovered by the Egyptian and Ottoman Assassins shortly afterwards.

These two seals from Alexandria were later taken to the local Assassins' headquarters, where they were studied by an unidentified woman referred to as a "blessed initiate." As she worked to "unlock the mysteries" of the seals, the Templars led an attack on the headquarters, though they were thwarted again by the Ottoman Assassins.

[[Niccolò Polo]], an Italian Assassin, took the five memory seals from Altair and hid them throughout Constantinople, each being placed in a small tomb in the hands of an Assassin statue. The first two were placed beneath Topkapi Palace (later recovered by the Templars who blew open the tomb) and in the Yerebetan Cistern, the old Polo trading post and beneath Sofia Sartor's book shop. The next three were placed in the caverns below Galata Tower, inside the Forum of the Ox and the Maiden Tower. In 1511-12, Ezio Auditore da Firenze uncovered the four seals and gained the final one from Templars in Cappadocia.

The sixth memory seal was kept with Altair inside his library where he recorded his final memory, hiding the Apple of Eden in a secret alcove at the back of the library.
