Kythera or Kythira is an arid Greek island located opposite the southernmost tip of Peloponnese. In the 5th century BCE, it was renowned for two principal things: its Temple of Aphrodite and the local trade of murex dye. The former attracted pilgrims from all across Greece while the latter was highly respected due to immense labor required to produce them from the hundreds of thousands murex shells found on the shores. Because of this, murex dye was greatly coveted in this era, was exceedingly rare, and enormously profitable for Kythera.
