"This little shard weighs heavily in my hand. It seems charged with a strange energy."
―Basim Ibn Ishaq on a shard he collected from a Tha'abeen member, 860s.[src]-[m]

Isu Shards, also known as Keys, were pieces of Isu technology used to open various doors and chambers made by the precursor race.

Design

The Isu shards found on Scotland's Isle of Skye during the Viking expansion were triangular and golden, engraved with a vertical dash on their front face.[1] These shards were identical in appearance to the Artifact Fragments that made up the Pyramid, an Isu artifact used in Greece during the Peloponnesian War by the Cult of Kosmos to support their schemes.[3] Unlike the Artifact Fragments, which could be used to upgrade Pieces of Eden like the Spear of Leonidas inside the Forge of Hephaistos,[4] the shards only served the function of opening Isu repositories.[1]

The shards carried by the Tha'abeen members of the Order of the Ancients in and around Baghdad were less triangular in shape and more rugged, covered by panel lines typical of the Isu's designs. Despite that, the pedestals which the artifacts could be inserted into had triangular slots, as seen in the vault under the Northern Oasis.[2]

History

During the 860s, the Order of the Ancients in Baghdad found a number of shards while excavating the Isu ruins around the city. Discovering that the artifacts were connected to an Isu vault beneath the Northern Oasis, the Order member known as Al-Ghul demanded that they be given to the Tha'abeen for protection until the Order found a way to access the vault.[2]

All of the Tha'abeen members entrusted with a shard were later hunted down by the Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq, who was also investigating the connection between the artifacts and the vault. After finding a way into the chamber, Basim placed the shards taken from the Tha'abeen into three corresponding pedestals. This deactivated the vault's energy barriers and allowed the Hidden One to claim the pieces of Isu equipment locked away behind them.[2]

In the 880s, the jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan found five shards scattered across the Isle of Skye, which were required to access the Isu vault inside the Cave of Gold. After placing the shards into a pedestal, the entrance to the vault opened, allowing Eivor and her ally, the Spartan misthios Kassandra, to access the chamber and retrieve the Apple of Eden it housed.[1]
