Heraklion is the largest city and the administrative capital of Crete, Greece. Named after the Greek hero, Herakles, the city was a small town which served as a port for the city of Knossos in classical antiquity.

During the Peloponnesian War, the town was visited by the Spartan misthios, Kassandra.
