Agis of the North (died c. 422 BCE) was a mercenary hired by the Order of Hunters who operated in Makedonia, Greece during the Peloponnesian War.
Biography
Originating from Lakonia in the Peloponnese, Agis was a known criminial in the region before he left and head north to Boeotia, settling down in the city of Thebes. There, he fabricated his identity as being a resident of the city, often telling people long stories of his life in Thebes to hide his past crimes.
At some point, he soon took up the role of a mercenary and became hired by the Order of Hunters to hunt down a woman in Makedonia. Around 422 BCE, he was assassinated by the Spartan misthios Kassandra at the request the woman.[1]
Trivia
- The name Agis is derived from the Greek verb ago (ἄγω), meaning "to lead, to guide" or "to bring, to carry". This name was borne by several Eurypontid Kings of Sparta.
