Sehetep (died 48 BCE) was the High Priest of Sobek who served at the Temple of Sobek in Krokodilopolis, Egypt, during the reign of Ptolemy XIII.
Biography[edit | edit source]
By 48 BCE, Sehetep had risen to become the High Priest of Sobek in Krokodilopolis, as well as the leader of a secretive cult that worshipped the crocodile-god. However, the cult soon became corrupt, as it began feeding civilians to crocodiles in secret 'parties' dubbed "Sobek's Secret Feasts."[1]
The cult also had several tame crocodiles residing at the Temple of Sobek, including the great albino crocodile Petsuchos, poisoned by Melina. While the animals did not die, they became visibly sick and agitated, leading many followers to believe Sobek was displeased with them, and increasing offerings to the temple as a result.[2] The cult even slaughtered crocodiles and used their badly mummified corpses to smuggle gold and valuables.[3] Sehetep was at the center of all these schemes, his main goal being to fill his pockets by any means.[4]
Eventually, the cult's existence and corrupt activities were discovered by the Medjay Bayek of Siwa, who set out to stop them.[1][2][3] Bayek was not the only one opposing the cult, as the priest Padiaset, an old friend of Sehetep, also discovered his sacrilegious practices. Despite their shared past, which dated back to before priesthood, Sehetep saw no option but to silence Padiaset, sending his soldiers after him. Fortunately, Padiaset was rescued by Bayek,[3] and later deduced that his old friend was the one leading the cult of Sobek.[4]
Furious, Padiaset attempted to confront Sehetep at the Temple of Sobek, only to be beset by his guards. The priest managed to defend himself and, upon the arrival of Bayek, notified the Medjay of his discovery. Although Padiaset volunteered to kill Sehetep himself, Bayek insisted that he deal with the corrupt priest, as one priest killing another would be very unseemly. Infiltrating the temple, he found Sehetep questioning his soldiers about the identity of the Medjay sabotaging their operations, and assassinated him.[4]
