History

War with England

In the mid-19th century, the British Empire was at war with the Xhosa Kingdom in what was the Cape Colony. The Royal Navy sent reinforcements in the form of a frigate, the HMS Birkenhead. In 1852, however, the frigate struck a large rock and sank along the country's coast. Many British soldiers died, others were evacuated in time, and few survived the impact.[1]
