Mytilene

Mytilene is a city situated on the eastern coast of Lesbos, Greece. During the Greco-Persian Wars, Mytilene was under the domination of the Achaemenid Empire, but later became a loyal ally of Athens after wars and eventually a member of the Delian League. When the Peloponnesian War broke out, the city revolted against Athens in 428 BCE after they were faced with the increasing tributes to the city.[1]

The city was also known as the birthplace of Sappho, an influential poet who established a school on a small acropolis overlooking the city.[1]
