The banner of Messara

Messara was a Greek kingdom on the island of Crete during the time of the Peloponnesian War.

Named after the illuvial plain located in the southern part of the kingdom, Messara was the site of some of the most important cities of the Minoan civilization. Among these were Gortyn, which at the time of the Peloponnesian War was still a thriving city which served as the capital of the Greek islands. In contrast, Knossos, the ancient capital of the Minoans, laid in ruins by this point.[1]

In Greek mythology, the relatively arid region was where the infant Zeus was hidden by his mother Rhea from his child-devouring father Kronos.
