Messara is an illuvial plain located in southern Crete which was the site of the most important cities of the Minoan civilization. Among these were Gortyn, which at the time of the Peloponnesian War was still a thriving city which served as the capital of the Greek islands. In contrast, Knossos, the ancient capital of the Minoans, lied in ruins by this point.[1]
In Greek mythology, the relatively arid region was where the infant Zeus was hidden by his mother, Rhea, from his child-devouring father, Cronos.
