Messara is an illuvial plain located in southern Crete. The city of Gortyn was located in the valley of the plains, which itself contained the ruined Palace of Knossos.
In Greek mythology, Messara was where a baby Zeus was hidden by his mother, Rhea, from his child-devouring father, Cronos.
