Messara is an illuvial plain located in southern Crete. In Greek mythology, the plains was where a baby Zeus was hidden by his mother Rhea from his child-devouring father Cronos. The city of Gortyn was located in the valley of the plains, which itself contained the ruined Palace of Knossos.
