Madrid is the largest and capital city of Spain.
History
In the late 15th century, the city was home to Cristoval de Merlo, a treasurer for the Inquisition. In 1489, the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins entered the city in search of a painting from a set created by Leonardo da Vinci that had been inadvertently gambled away by their associate, Jaime del Rada. The paintings were obtained by the Inquisition captain Diego de Burgos, who separated them and gave one to each of his underlings. Among those people was Cristoval, who kept the painting deep underground beneath the city slums for safekeeping until it was recovered by the Assassins.[1]
In 1511, Grand Inquisitor Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, the successor of Tomás de Torquemada, persecuted Spanish Assassins for crimes unrelated to their activities. Ottoman Assassins sent from Constantinople by Ezio Auditore da Firenze sought out the culprits in the city and killed them. The Templar presence in Madrid was ousted entirely as the Assassins wrested control of the city, establishing Dens from which they would engage in activities to help revitalize and develop the city.[2]

In November 2017, at their home in Madrid, Abstergo technicians and Templar members Alice Adler and Thomas Adler tried to find a missing Apple of Eden by putting a restrained Maxime Gorm with amnesia into their own Animus.[5] They knew Maxime was the grandson of the English Assassin Eddie Gorm, who came into contact with the Apple. Personally, they also studied the Bleeding Effect on Gorm in order to help their daughter Elisa Adler, who was also inflicted with amnesia. However, their experiment proved unsuccessful.[6]
