Karkh is the historical name of the western half of Baghdad.[1] During the Islamic Golden Age, it designated a district southeast of the Round City, which served as the city's marketing hub. It was here that large crowds gathered to do business and trade goods from China, Constantinople, and Spain.[2]
By the 9th century, the district was split into three separate suburbs: the harbor region of Sharqiyah, the market region of Tabik containing The Bazaar, and the Fief of Rayasanah situated outside the Round City. In the 860s, Karkh was one of the locations chosen by the Alamut Hidden Ones Fuladh Al Haami and Roshan to have a new bureau established.[3]
