The Government of National Defense was the first government of the Third French Republic. It lasted from late 1870 until early 1871, when it collapsed due to their defeat in the Franco-Prussian War.

History[edit | edit source]

In the fall of 1870, the Government of National Defense was established after Napoleon III's capture and fall as emperor. To contend with the Prussians, it used the Champ de Mars as a fighting training grounds for the civilians to combat their enemies. However, within a few months, the government abandoned the Parisians as the Prussians surrounded Paris. Due to lack of aid from the government, the French Assassins aided the people as best they could despite the lack of provisions.[1]

With the war raging against the people of Paris, the French Brotherhood finally intercepted a message for French Templar Victoire L'Estocq from Austrian Templar Countess Konstanze von Visler, who detailed on they manipulated the government from Tours to withhold aid for the Parisians.[2] However, after a truce between the British Assassin Simeon Price and the countess,[3] the Templar stopped their manipulation as the government signed an armistice with the new German Empire for peace. Afterwards, the government itself disbanded as a result.[4]
