Franz Joseph I or Francis Joseph I (1830 – 1916) was the Austrian Emperor, King of Hungary, and the other states of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 2 December 1848 until his death.
A member of the House of Habsburg which had a ruled a vast number lands in Central Europe, Franz Joseph succeeded his uncle Ferdinand as Emperor in 1848, inheriting the throne at the time when Europe was plagued by a number of revolutions including various within the Austrian Empire.[1]
Biography
In 1853, in Vienna, Franz Joseph was walking on his usual route, alongside his soldiers and his military aide, Maximilian Karl Lamoral O'Donnell. However, he became the subject of an assassination attempt by Hungarian tailor János Libényi, who managed to stab the emperor in the neck with a kitchen knife.[2] With the intervention of his aide, Franz Joseph survived the attempt as the Viennese butcher Joseph Ettenreich and another associate, "Jack Straw," restrained Libényi before any more damage could be done.[3]
