Dianthe was a Greek woman from Mykonos who lived during the 5th century BCE. She was a one time lover of the Athenian commander Podarkes, which resulted in the birth of their daughter Kyra.

Biography

Before the Peloponnesian War, Dianthe and Kyra visited Podarkes often in his house in Mykonos City, meeting Otonia there. Eventually, Podarkes sent Dianthe a letter telling her to stop visiting him, stop speaking about Kyra and her parentage. Apparently Dianthe didn't believe him, or else he decided to make sure she would not talk about any of it, and sent soldiers to Dianthe's home to kill Dianthe and Kyra. Dianthe was slain in front of Kyra, but the girl managed to flee.[1]

When the Spartan misthios Kassandra reached the Silver Islands and joined the rebels' cause, Otonia caught her attention and led her to learn about Kyra's past, including Dianthe. While doing so, she discovered Dianthe's remains in the abandoned house.[1]

Trivia

  • Dianthe is a Greek female name derived from the words θεός (theós) and άνθος (ánthos), meaning together 'godly/heavenly flower'.
