Ailos (died in 430s or 420s BCE) was a bandit who haunted Lokris, Greece during the 5th century BCE. She was the biological mother of Supideo.

Biography

Years before the Peloponnesian War, Ailos had a relationship with Kosta, the blacksmith of Opous. This affair resulted in the birth of Supideo, who was given to Katina and Pedasos, a couple living in Opous as well.[1]

Ailos remained in the region, and settled in a cave by the Red Lake, becoming the leader of the bandits located therein.[2] Unbeknownst to her, Supideo visited the Pythia of Delphi, and received a prophecy which stated he would cause his mother's brutal death and his father to scream in agony. While he was visiting the Oracle, Ailos stole a shield from Katina and Pedasos.[1]

Supideo tasked the passing Spartan misthios Kassandra to recover his sword and shield in order for his parents, Katina and Pedasos, to protect themselves.[1] This led Kassandra to Ailos, and in the following scuffle, Ailos was slain, thus fulfilling her part of the prophecy.[2]

Behind the scenes

Supideo is Oedipus spelled backwards. Ailos' name is an anagram of Laios, the name of Oedipus' father, as fitting with the whole of Supideo's story being a parody and an homage to Oedipus' tale.
