Aikaterine (fl. 424 BCE) was an Athenian hetaera who served at the House of Aphrodite during the 5th century BCE.

Biography

In around 424 BCE, Aikaterine was the 'muse' of the moment for the actor Thespis. Due to this relationship, her life was threatened by the Commander Rhexenor, as she was involved in Aristophanes' plot to tarnish the reputation of the Athenian general Kleon. When the Spartan misthios Kassandra approached Aikaterine to help Thespis play his part in the playwright Aristophanes' latest play,[1] Aikaterine revealed Rhexenor's part in all this, and wished for Kassandra to bring her his 'little sword'. After Kassandra dealt with Rhexenor, Aikaterine was free to accompany Thespis again, and the play could proceed as planned.[2]
